The review
Do you have a strong-willed little one who refuses to wear pants, shirts, or some article of clothing at home? This book describes a boy who insists in only wearing his underwear, and the shenanigans he gets up to in an underwear-only world.
After an argument with his mum where he refuses to wear clothes on top of his underwear, Da Bao runs out of his house, only to encounter a talking raccoon who introduces him to Underwear Street. It's a gateway to a place where everyone wears only underwear, right down to even the vegetables in the supermarket.
At a deeper level, the book does use humour to address stubborn behavior. Many of us probably will relate to this particular incident and the outright defiance our children display. What this book does well is to make it absolutely ridiculous, while downplaying the "disciplining" or "teaching" elements, which will typically be met with a lot of resistance. This exaggeration forms a good distraction, and your little one might end up being more receptive once they realise how silly it is.
This book caught my eye as the artwork was also by the same illustrator for the Rice Cake Onsen book. So naturally when Taobao's recommendations came up, I had to take a look. There is something magical that Japanese children's authors can put together that I can't find anywhere else!
At the end, there is even a song you can sing, I haven't got there yet, but one day I'll have an underwear song in my repertoire.
